Charles County, Maryland is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 120546. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 140764, making it Maryland's 11th largest county. It is spread over 643.22 sq mi (1665.93 square kilometre), of which, 461 square miles (1193.98 square kilometre ) of it is land and 182.22 square miles (471.95 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the seventh largest by total area among Maryland's county. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in Maryland.

As of the census of 2000, there were 120546 people in the county, organized into 41668 households, and 32277 families living in the county. The population density was 261.5 people per square mile (100.97/kmē), it is Maryland's 12th most densely populated county. There were 43903 housing units at an average density of 95.2 per square mile (36.76/kmē). The average household size was 2.86 people, and the average family size was 3.21 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 28.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 140764, The racial makeup of the county was 55.35% White, 39.01% Black or African American, 0.73% American Indian, 2.45% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 2.41% from two or more races.
