Charles City County is a independent city located in the United States of Virginia. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 6926 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 7212, making it Virginia's 16th smallest independent city. It covers total area of 204.22 square miles (528.93 kmē), of which, 182.76 square miles (473.35 kmē) of it is land and 21.46 square miles (55.58 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 43rd smallest by total area among Virginia's independent city.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6926 people, 2670 households, and 1977 families living in the independent city. The population density was 37.9 people per square mile (14.63/kmē), it is 20th least densely populated independent city in Virginia. There were 2895 housing units at an average density of 15.8 per square mile (6.1/kmē). The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.02. In the independent city the population is diverse age-wise, with 22.1% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 28.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.8 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 7212, The racial makeup of the independent city was 44.05% White, 46.74% Black or African American, 7.61% American Indian, 0.15% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 1.44% from two or more races.
