Chariton County is a county located in the United States of Missouri. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 8438 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 7740, It is 16th least populous county in Missouri. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 768.25 mi˛ (1989.76 square kilometre), of which, 755.87 square miles (1957.69 square kilometre) of it is land and 12.38 square miles (32.06 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 17th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8438 people, 3469 households, and 2344 families living in the county. The population density was 11.2 people per square mile (4.32/km˛), it is the eighth least populated county in terms of population density. There were 4250 housing units at an average density of 5.6 per square mile (2.16/km˛). The average household size was 2.38 persons, and the average family size was 2.94 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 22.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 108.8 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 109.5 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 7740, The racial makeup of the county was 95.58% White, 3.45% Black or African American, 0.19% American Indian, 0.14% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.63% from two or more races.
