Chapel Hill Town is one of the town of Orange and Chatham counties, North Carolina, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 48715. In July 2008, its estimated population was 52542, It is 16th most populous in North Carolina. It covers total area of 19.82 sq mi (51.33 kmē), of which, 19.75 square miles (51.15 kmē) of it is land and 0.07 square miles (0.18 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 31st largest by total area among North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 48715 people, 17808 households, and 8139 families residing in the town. The population density was 2466 people per square mile (952.13/kmē), giving it the fourth most densely populated town among the North Carolina. There were 18976 housing units at an average density of 960.8 per square mile (370.97/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.22 persons, and the average family size was 2.88 persons. In the town the population was spread out, with 15.1% under the age of 18, 37.1% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 15.3% from 45 to 64, and 8% who were 65 or older.
