The county encompasses an area of 429.71 sq mi (1112.94 kmē ), of which, 428.56 square miles (1109.97 kmē) of it is land and 1.15 square miles (2.98 kmē) of it is water, making it the 51st largest by size in Ohio.

For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.9 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 39650, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 37799 White, 945 Black or African American, 145 American Indian, 168 Asian, 8 Native Hawaiian, and 585 from two or more races.
