Catron County, New Mexico


Catron County is a county located in New Mexico, in the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. Catron County had an official population of 3543 in 2000. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 3405, It is the third least populous county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. It has total area of 6929.03 sq mi (17946.11 kmē), of which, 6927.81 square miles (17942.95 kmē) of it is land and 1.22 square miles (3.16 kmē) of it is water, making it New Mexico's largest county by total area.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 3543 people, 1584 households, and 1041 families living in the county. The population density was 0.5 people per square mile (0.19/kmē), it would be the second least densely populated county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. There were 2548 housing units at an average density of 0.4 per square mile (0.15/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.23 persons, and the average family size was 2.75 persons. In the Catron County, 21.1% of the population was under the age of 18, 4.2% were 18 to 24, 19.5% were 25 to 44, 36.4% were 45 to 64, and 18.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 104.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.7 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 3405, The racial makeup of the county was 94.27% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 2.76% American Indian, 0.62% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 1.94% from two or more races.
