Carteret County, North Carolina is a county of the United States of North Carolina. In 2000, county's population was 59383 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 63195 in July 2008, It is the 40th most populous county in the U.S. state of North Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1340.53 mi˛ (3471.96 sq km), of which, 519.84 square miles (1346.38 sq km) of it is land and 820.68 square miles (2125.55 sq km) of it is water, makes it the third largest by total area in North Carolina. It is ranks second in the size of its inland waterways in North Carolina.

The population density was 114.2 people per square mile (44.09/km˛), it is the 43rd most populated county in terms of population density. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 20.7% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 28.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.1 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 63195, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 90.13% White, 7.44% Black or African American, 0.49% American Indian, 0.71% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, and 1.14% from two or more races.
