Carter County is one of the 95 county of Tennessee, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 56742. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 59492, making it Tennessee's 22nd largest county. The county encompasses an area of 347.62 mi˛ (900.33 sq km ), of which, 341.05 square miles (883.32 sq km) of it is land and 6.57 square miles (17.02 sq km) of it is water, making it Tennessee's 64th largest county by total area.

The population density was 166.4 people per square mile (64.25/km˛), giving it the 16th most densely populated county among the Tennessee. There were 25920 housing units at an average density of 76 per square mile (29.34/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.35 persons, and the average family size was 2.83 persons. In the Carter County, 21.4% of the population was under the age of 18, 9.2% were 18 to 24, 29% were 25 to 44, 25.4% were 45 to 64, and 15% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.6 males. Its population was estimated at 59492 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 57439 White, 1152 Black or African American, 147 American Indian, 208 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 541 from two or more races.
