Carter County is a one of the county from Oklahoma's 77 counties, located in Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. It is home to over 45621 people (2000 census). The July 2008 population estimate is 47979, It is the 16th most populous county in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. It is spread over 833.72 sq mi (2159.32 square kilometre), of which, 823.79 square miles (2133.61 square kilometre ) of it is land and 9.93 square miles (25.72 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 37th largest by area in the U.S. state of Oklahoma.

The population density was 55.4 people per square mile (21.39/kmē), giving it the 18th most densely populated county among the Oklahoma. There were 20577 housing units at an average density of 25 per square mile (9.65/kmē). The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.98. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 16% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 47979, The racial makeup of the county was 78.57% White, 7.76% Black or African American, 8.45% American Indian, 0.75% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 4.44% from two or more races.
