Carter County is a United States county located in the United States of Montana. The population of the county was 1360 as per the 2000 census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 1234, It is seventh least populous county in Montana. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3348.29 sq mi (8672.03 kmē), of which, 3339.57 square miles (8649.45 kmē) of it is land and 8.73 square miles (22.61 kmē) of it is water, it is the 15th largest by area in the U.S. state of Montana.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 1360 residents, 543 households, and 383 families in the county. The population density was 0.4 people per square mile (0.15/kmē), making it the third least densely populated county in Montana. There were 811 housing units at an average density of 0.2 per square mile (0.08/kmē). The average household size was 2.47 persons, and the average family size was 2.99 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 26.5% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.7 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 1234, The racial makeup of the county was 98.87% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 0.49% American Indian, 0.32% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.24% from two or more races.
