Carter County is a county in the United States of Missouri. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Carter County is home to 5941 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 5890, making it the eighth least populous county in Missouri. The county extends throughout a territory of 509.02 mi˛ (1318.36 sq km ), of which, 507.58 square miles (1314.63 sq km) of it is land and 1.44 square miles (3.73 sq km) of it is water, making it Missouri's 34th smallest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5941 people, 2378 households, and 1673 families living in the county. The population density was 11.7 people per square mile (4.52/km˛), it is the 11th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Missouri. There were 3028 housing units at an average density of 6 per square mile (2.32/km˛). The average household size was 2.46 people, and the average family size was 2.97 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 25.1% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 25% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 5890, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 5663 White, 7 Black or African American, 91 American Indian, 7 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 120 from two or more races.
