Carter County is a county located in the United States of Kentucky. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Carter County is home to 26889 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 27454, making it the 39th most populous county in Kentucky. The county spans an area of 412.15 square miles (1067.46 kmē), of which, 410.6 square miles (1063.45 kmē) of it is land and 1.55 square miles (4.01 kmē) of it is water, making it Kentucky's 32nd largest county by total area.


As of the census of 2000, there were 26889 people in the county, organized into 10342 households, and 7741 families residing in the county. The population density was 65.5 people per square mile (25.29/kmē), it is the 56th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Kentucky. There were 11534 housing units at an average density of 28.1 per square mile (10.85/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.54 persons, and the average family size was 2.95 persons. In the Carter County, 24.5% of the population was under the age of 18, 10.8% were 18 to 24, 28.4% were 25 to 44, 23.8% were 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males.
