As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 15841, It is 31st least populous county in Illinois. The county comprises an area of 465.77 sq mi (1206.34 square kilometre), of which, 444.21 square miles (1150.5 square kilometre) of it is land and 21.56 square miles (55.84 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 61st largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in Illinois.
