Carlisle County is a county located in Kentucky, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 5351. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 5162, It is the fourth least populous county in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It has total area of 199.02 mi˛ (515.46 square kilometre), of which, 192.49 square miles (498.55 square kilometre) of it is land and 6.54 square miles (16.94 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 18th smallest by total area in Kentucky.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5351 people, 2208 households, and 1575 families residing in the county. The population density was 27.8 people per square mile (10.73/km˛), making it the sixth least densely populated county in Kentucky. There were 2490 housing units at an average density of 12.9 per square mile (4.98/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.4 persons, and the average family size was 2.88 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.4% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.9 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 5162, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 96.98% White, 1.67% Black or African American, 0.48% American Indian, 0.1% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.77% from two or more races.
