Carbondale City is a city located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, in the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 9804. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 9208, giving it the 112th largest population among Pennsylvania. Its area is just over 3.24 sq mi (8.39 kmē), making it Pennsylvania's 198th largest by total area.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 9804 residents, 4084 households, and 2563 families in the city. The population density was 3027.5 people per square mile (1168.92/kmē), it is the 388th most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. There were 4527 housing units at an average density of 1397.2 per square mile (539.46/kmē). The average household size was 2.34 persons, and the average family size was 2.99 persons. In the city the population was spread out, with 23.1% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.8% who were 65 or older. The median age is 40.7 years, the median age of male residents at 37.2 and the median age of female residents at 43.7. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 9662 White, 23 Black or African American, 20 American Indian, 23 Asian, Native Hawaiian, 51 from two or more races and 25 Ohter races.
