Carbon County is a United States county located in the United States of Wyoming. The population of the county was 15639 as per the 2000 census data. Its population was estimated at 15624 in July 2008, making it the 12th most populous county in Wyoming. The county comprises an area of 7964.03 sq mi (20626.74 sq km), of which, 7896.14 square miles (20450.91 sq km) of it is land and 67.89 square miles (175.83 sq km) of it is water, it is the third largest by area in the U.S. state of Wyoming. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in Wyoming.

As of the census of 2000, there were 15639 people, 6129 households, and 4134 families residing in the county. The population density was 2 people per square mile (0.77/kmē), giving it the fourth least densely populated county among the Wyoming. There were 8307 housing units at an average density of 1.1 per square mile (0.42/kmē). The average household size was 2.39 people, and the average family size was 2.91 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.1% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 86.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 84.7 females. The July 2008 population estimate is 15624, The racial makeup of the county was 14893 White, 135 Black or African American, 240 American Indian, 145 Asian, 9 Native Hawaiian, and 202 from two or more races.
