Carbon County is a county located in the United States of Montana. The population of county in 2000 stood at 9552 as per the Census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 9657, making it the 20th most populous county in Montana. It has total area of 2062.19 sq mi (5341.05 square kilometre), of which, 2047.99 square miles (5304.27 square kilometre) of it is land and 14.2 square miles (36.78 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 33rd largest by area in the U.S. state of Montana.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9552 people in the county, organized into 4065 households, and 2706 families residing in the county. The population density was 4.7 people per square mile (1.81/kmē), giving it the 15th most densely populated county among the Montana. There were 5494 housing units at an average density of 2.7 per square mile (1.04/kmē). The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.86. In the county Population was distributed with 24% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 9657, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.32% White, 0.32% Black or African American, 1.08% American Indian, 0.33% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.95% from two or more races.
