Cape Girardeau City is one of the city of Cape Girardeau and Scott counties, Missouri, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 35349 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 37370, making it Missouri's 17th largest. The city comprises an area of 24.32 square miles (62.99 sq km), of which, 24.27 square miles (62.86 sq km) of it is land and 0.05 square miles (0.13 sq km) of it is water, making it the 15th largest by size in Missouri.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 35349 residents, 14380 households, and 8293 families in the city. The population density was 1456.5 people per square mile (562.36/kmē), it would be the 182nd most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Missouri. There were 15827 housing units at an average density of 652.1 per square mile (251.78/kmē). The average household size was 2.24 persons, and the average family size was 2.9 persons. Age range in the city was well distributed with 20.5% under the age of 18, 18.4% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.9 males. The median age of the city's population was 33.6 years, the median age of male residents at 31.8 and the median age of female residents at 35.3. The racial makeup of the city was 30865 White, 3288 Black or African American, 138 American Indian, 400 Asian, 13 Native Hawaiian, 494 from two or more races and 151 Ohter races.
