Callaway County is one of the 115 county of Missouri, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 40766. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 43464, It is the 23rd largest county by population in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is spread over 847.03 mi˛ (2193.8 square kilometre), of which, 838.84 square miles (2172.59 square kilometre ) of it is land and 8.19 square miles (21.21 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the seventh largest by total area among Missouri's county.

The population density was 48.6 people per square mile (18.76/km˛), it is the 36th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Missouri. There were 16167 housing units at an average density of 19.3 per square mile (7.45/km˛). The average household size was 2.56 people, and the average family size was 3 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.4% under the age of 18, 11.1% from 18 to 24, 31% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 11% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 107.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.9 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 43464, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 39958 White, 2289 Black or African American, 233 American Indian, 393 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 586 from two or more races.
