The county comprises an area of 901.26 mi˛ (2334.25 sq km), of which, 898.62 square miles (2327.42 sq km) of it is land and 2.64 square miles (6.84 sq km) of it is water, it is the 163rd largest in terms of geographical size.

In the county the population was distributed as follows: 26.2% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 17% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.9 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 13533, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 12970 White, 236 Black or African American, 113 American Indian, 65 Asian, 7 Native Hawaiian, and 142 from two or more races.
