California is a United States's state located in the Western Region (Pacific) of United States. The state has a population of 33871648 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 36756666, giving it the largest population among United States. Its area is just over 163695.57 sq mi (423969.58 square kilometre), of which, 155959.34 square miles (403932.84 square kilometre) of it is land and 7736.23 square miles (20036.74 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the third largest by total area in United States. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in United States.

As of the census of 2000, there were 33871648 people, 11502870 households, and 7920049 families living in the state. The population density was 217.2 people per square mile (83.86/kmē), it would be the 12th most densely populated state in the U.S. state of America. There were 12214549 housing units at an average density of 78.3 per square mile (30.23/kmē). The average household size was 2.87 persons, and the average family size was 3.43 persons. In the state the population was spread out, with 27.3% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.1 males. The median age is 33.3 years, the median age of male residents at 32.2 and the median age of female residents at 34.4. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the state is 33871648, The racial or ethnic makeup of the state was 20170059 White, 2263882 Black or African American, 333346 American Indian, 3697513 Asian, 116961 Native Hawaiian, 1607646 from two or more races and 5682241 Ohter races.
