Calhoun County, Arkansas is a county located in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Calhoun County is home to 5744 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 5435, It is the smallest in terms of population. It is spread over 632.54 square miles (1638.27 kmē), of which, 628.27 square miles (1627.21 kmē ) of it is land and 4.27 square miles (11.06 kmē) of it is water, it is the 48th largest by area in the U.S. state of Arkansas.


As of the census of 2000, there were 5744 people in the county, organized into 2317 households, and 1629 families residing in the county. The population density was 9.1 people per square mile (3.51/kmē), making its Arkansas's least densely populated county. There were 3012 housing units at an average density of 4.8 per square mile (1.85/kmē). The average household size was 2.43 persons, and the average family size was 2.94 persons. The population's age distribution was 24.6% under the age of 18, 7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 5435, The racial makeup of the county was 4091 White, 1269 Black or African American, 14 American Indian, 2 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 59 from two or more races.
