In July 2008, its estimated population was 30470, making it the ninth most populous county in Vermont. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 657.52 miē (1702.97 kmē), of which, 650.59 square miles (1685.02 kmē) of it is land and 6.94 square miles (17.97 kmē) of it is water, giving it the fourth smallest by total area among Vermont's county. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in Vermont.
