Calaveras County is a county in the United States of California. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 40554 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 46843, giving it the 15th smallest population among California's county. The county has a total area of 1036.84 mi˛ (2685.4 square kilometre), of which, 1020.04 square miles (2641.89 square kilometre) of it is land and 16.81 square miles (43.54 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 18th smallest by size in California.

The population's age distribution was 22.8% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 22.4% from 25 to 44, 31.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.7 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 46843, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 92.66% White, 1.15% Black or African American, 1.81% American Indian, 1.45% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian, and 2.83% from two or more races.
