Calais City is a city in the Washington County, Maine, United States. The city has a population of 3447 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 3184, It is the 42nd most populous in the U.S. state of Maine. The city extends throughout a territory of 40.02 mi˛ (103.65 sq km ), of which, 34.04 square miles (88.16 sq km) of it is land and 5.98 square miles (15.49 sq km) of it is water, it is the eighth largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in Maine.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3447 people, 1486 households, and 905 families residing in the city. The population density was 101.3 people per square mile (39.11/km˛), it is the third least densely populated city in the U.S. state of Maine. There were 1921 housing units at an average density of 56.4 per square mile (21.78/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.24 persons, and the average family size was 2.88 persons.
