According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 94631, It is West Virginia's third most populous county. The county comprises an area of 288.02 sq mi (745.97 kmē), of which, 281.59 square miles (729.31 kmē) of it is land and 6.43 square miles (16.65 kmē) of it is water, making it West Virginia's 11th smallest county by total area. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in West Virginia.

The population density was 343.7 people per square mile (132.7/kmē), making it the third most densely populated county in West Virginia.
