Butte County is a United States county located in the United States of California. Butte County had an official population of 203171 in 2000. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 220337, It is the 27th most populous county in the U.S. state of California. The county comprises an area of 1677.11 sq mi (4343.69 square kilometre), of which, 1639.49 square miles (4246.26 square kilometre) of it is land and 37.62 square miles (97.44 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 29th largest by area in the U.S. state of California.

The population density was 123.9 people per square mile (47.84/kmē), making its California's 24th most densely populated county. There were 85523 housing units at an average density of 52.2 per square mile (20.15/kmē). The average household size was 2.48 people, and the average family size was 3.02 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 24% under the age of 18, 13.6% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 220337, The racial makeup of the county was 195617 White, 3725 Black or African American, 4791 American Indian, 9039 Asian, 433 Native Hawaiian, and 6732 from two or more races.
