Butler County is a United States county located in the United States of Pennsylvania. Butler County had an official population of 174083 in 2000. Its population was estimated at 182902 in July 2008, It is the 19th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The county comprises an area of 794.79 mi˛ (2058.5 square kilometre), of which, 788.53 square miles (2042.28 square kilometre) of it is land and 6.26 square miles (16.21 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 25th largest by area in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania.

As of the census of 2000, there were 174083 people, 65862 households, and 46839 families living in the county. The population density was 220.8 people per square mile (85.25/km˛), making its Pennsylvania's 25th most densely populated county. There were 69868 housing units at an average density of 88.6 per square mile (34.21/km˛). The average household size was 2.55 people, and the average family size was 3.04 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.6% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.8 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 182902, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.28% White, 1.07% Black or African American, 0.1% American Indian, 0.91% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.61% from two or more races.
