The July 2008 population estimate is 360765, making it the eighth most populous county in Ohio. It covers total area of 470.2 sq mi (1217.81 square kilometre), of which, 467.27 square miles (1210.22 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.93 square miles (7.59 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 40th largest by area in the U.S. state of Ohio.

The population density was 712.2 people per square mile (274.98/kmē), giving it the eighth most densely populated county among the Ohio. There were 129793 housing units at an average density of 277.8 per square mile (107.26/kmē). The average household size was 2.61 persons, and the average family size was 3.07 persons. In the Butler County, 25.9% of the population was under the age of 18, 11.9% were 18 to 24, 29.8% were 25 to 44, 21.7% were 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 360765, The racial makeup of the county was 322377 White, 25137 Black or African American, 828 American Indian, 7699 Asian, 155 Native Hawaiian, and 4569 from two or more races.
