As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 63562, It is the eighth most populous county in the U.S. state of Kansas. The county encompasses an area of 1446.42 miē (3746.21 kmē ), of which, 1427.85 square miles (3698.11 kmē) of it is land and 18.57 square miles (48.1 kmē) of it is water, giving it the largest by total area among Kansas's county. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in Kansas.
