Butler County is a county located in the United States of Alabama. The population of the county was 21399 as per the 2000 census data. In July 2008, its estimated population was 20090, making it the 19th least populous county in Alabama. Its area is just over 777.92 sq mi (2014.8 square kilometre), of which, 776.87 square miles (2012.08 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.05 square miles (2.72 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 24th largest by size in Alabama.

The population density was 27.5 people per square mile (10.62/kmē), making its Alabama's 20th least densely populated county. There were 9957 housing units at an average density of 12.8 per square mile (4.94/kmē). The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.06. In the county Population was distributed with 26.9% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 88 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.9 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 20090, The racial makeup of the county was 56.93% White, 41.88% Black or African American, 0.22% American Indian, 0.44% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.53% from two or more races.
