Buncombe County is a one of the county from North Carolina's 100 counties, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 206330 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 229047, It is the seventh largest county by population in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The county spans an area of 659.8 square miles (1708.87 kmē), of which, 655.99 square miles (1699.01 kmē) of it is land and 3.81 square miles (9.87 kmē) of it is water, making it North Carolina's 22nd largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 206330 people in the county, organized into 85776 households, and 55661 families living in the county. The population density was 314.5 people per square mile (121.43/kmē), giving it the 11th most densely populated county among the North Carolina. There were 93973 housing units at an average density of 143.3 per square mile (55.33/kmē). The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.86. In the county the population was spread out, with 21.9% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 229047, The racial makeup of the county was 90.14% White, 7.18% Black or African American, 0.43% American Indian, 0.99% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 1.21% from two or more races.
