Buffalo County is a county located in South Dakota, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 2032. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 2142, It is the tenth smallest in terms of population. It is spread over 487.43 square miles (1262.44 sq km), of which, 470.59 square miles (1218.82 sq km ) of it is land and 16.83 square miles (43.59 sq km) of it is water, making it South Dakota's sixth smallest county by total area.


As of the census of 2000, there were 2032 people, 526 households, and 422 families residing in the county. The population density was 4.3 people per square mile (1.66/kmē), it is the 42nd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. There were 602 housing units at an average density of 1.3 per square mile (0.5/kmē). The average household size was 3.83 people, and the average family size was 4.23 people. In the county Age distribution was 41.3% under the age of 18, 11% from 18 to 24, 25% from 25 to 44, 16.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 94.8 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 102 females.
