Buffalo County is a county located in South Dakota, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 2032. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 2142, It is the tenth smallest in terms of population. It is spread over 487.43 square miles (1262.44 sq km), of which, 470.59 square miles (1218.82 sq km ) of it is land and 16.83 square miles (43.59 sq km) of it is water, making it South Dakota's sixth smallest county by total area.

The population density was 4.3 people per square mile (1.66/kmē), it is the 42nd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of South Dakota.
