Buckingham County, Virginia is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Buckingham County is home to 15623 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 15977, It is the 43rd smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Virginia. The county encompasses an area of 583.56 square miles (1511.41 sq km ), of which, 580.86 square miles (1504.42 sq km) of it is land and 2.7 square miles (6.99 sq km) of it is water, it is the 14th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 15623 people, 5324 households, and 3760 families residing in the county. The population density was 26.9 people per square mile (10.39/kmē), making it the tenth least densely populated county in Virginia. There were 6290 housing units at an average density of 10.8 per square mile (4.17/kmē). The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.99. In the county the population was spread out, with 22.4% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 82.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 79 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 15977, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 61.76% White, 36.68% Black or African American, 0.23% American Indian, 0.21% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 1.11% from two or more races.
