Buchanan County is one of the 135 county of Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 26978. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 23521, It is Virginia's 70th most populous county. It has total area of 503.88 square miles (1305.04 kmē), giving it the 27th largest by total area among Virginia's county.

The population density was 53.5 people per square mile (20.66/kmē), it is Virginia's 38th least densely populated county. There were 11887 housing units at an average density of 23.6 per square mile (9.11/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.46 persons, and the average family size was 2.87 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 21.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who were 65 or older.
