Buchanan County is one of the 135 county of Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 26978. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 23521, It is Virginia's 70th most populous county. It has total area of 503.88 square miles (1305.04 kmē), giving it the 27th largest by total area among Virginia's county.

The population density was 53.5 people per square mile (20.66/kmē), it is Virginia's 38th least densely populated county. There were 11887 housing units at an average density of 23.6 per square mile (9.11/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.46 persons, and the average family size was 2.87 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 21.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.3 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 23521, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 22561 White, 766 Black or African American, 16 American Indian, 65 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 112 from two or more races.
