Brown County is one of the 66 county of South Dakota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 35460 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 35154, making it South Dakota's fourth largest county. Its area is just over 1731.21 square miles (4483.81 square kilometre), of which, 1713.07 square miles (4436.83 square kilometre) of it is land and 18.14 square miles (46.98 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 13th largest by total area in South Dakota.

The population density was 20.7 people per square mile (7.99/kmē), it would be the 12th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. There were 15861 housing units at an average density of 9.3 per square mile (3.59/kmē). The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.91. In the county Age distribution was 23.6% under the age of 18, 11.6% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 107.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 111.7 females. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 35154, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 33362 White, 148 Black or African American, 1034 American Indian, 205 Asian, 43 Native Hawaiian, and 362 from two or more races.
