In July 2008, its estimated population was 43960, making it the 53rd most populous county in Ohio. Its area is just over 495.22 mi˛ (1282.61 square kilometre), of which, 491.76 square miles (1273.65 square kilometre) of it is land and 3.46 square miles (8.96 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Ohio's 34th largest county by total area.

In the county the population was distributed as follows: 27.6% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.8 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 43960, The racial makeup of the county was 97.63% White, 1.16% Black or African American, 0.19% American Indian, 0.25% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.77% from two or more races.
