Its population was estimated at 3149 in July 2008, It is 28th least populous county in Nebraska. It covers total area of 1225.08 square miles (3172.94 kmē), of which, 1221.28 square miles (3163.1 kmē) of it is land and 3.8 square miles (9.84 kmē) of it is water, making it the tenth largest by size in Nebraska.

The population density was 2.9 people per square mile (1.12/kmē), giving it the 19th least densely populated county among the Nebraska. Age range in the county was well distributed with 24.8% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 22.8% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males.
