It is spread over 316.62 mi˛ (820.04 square kilometre), of which, 312.26 square miles (808.75 square kilometre ) of it is land and 4.36 square miles (11.29 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 16th smallest by size in Indiana.

The population's age distribution was 23.3% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 29.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.1 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 14550, The racial makeup of the county was 97.48% White, 0.83% Black or African American, 0.42% American Indian, 0.31% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.94% from two or more races.
