Brown County is a county in the United States of Illinois. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 6950 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 6573, It is Illinois's tenth least populous county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 307.24 sq mi (795.75 kmē), of which, 305.65 square miles (791.63 kmē) of it is land and 1.59 square miles (4.12 kmē) of it is water, it is the 12th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.

The population density was 22.7 people per square mile (8.76/kmē), making its Illinois's 11th least densely populated county. There were 2456 housing units at an average density of 8 per square mile (3.09/kmē). The average household size was 2.36 people, and the average family size was 2.96 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 17.8% under the age of 18, 12.6% from 18 to 24, 37.5% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 57.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 51.4 females. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 6573, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 5242 White, 1274 Black or African American, 6 American Indian, 13 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 33 from two or more races.
