Broome County is one of the 62 county of New York, located towards the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 200536 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 195018, giving it the 19th largest population among New York's county. The county encompasses an area of 715.46 miē (1853.03 kmē ), of which, 706.82 square miles (1830.66 kmē) of it is land and 8.64 square miles (22.38 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 33rd largest by total area among New York's county.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 200536 residents, 80749 households, and 50231 families in the county. The population density was 283.7 people per square mile (109.54/kmē), it is 19th most densely populated county in New York. There were 88817 housing units at an average density of 125.7 per square mile (48.53/kmē). The average household size was 2.37 persons, and the average family size was 2.97 persons. In the Broome County, 23% of the population was under the age of 18, 11% were 18 to 24, 26.8% were 25 to 44, 22.8% were 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 195018, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 175709 White, 8918 Black or African American, 456 American Indian, 6670 Asian, 83 Native Hawaiian, and 3182 from two or more races.
