Brooksville City is one of the city of Hernando County, Florida, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 7264. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 8292, giving it the 334th largest population among Florida. The city extends throughout a territory of 4.97 mi˛ (12.87 square kilometre ), of which, 4.94 square miles (12.79 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 330th largest by total area in Florida.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7264 people, 3220 households, and 1833 families residing in the city. The population density was 1469.5 people per square mile (567.38/km˛), making it the 481st most densely populated city in Florida. There were 3920 housing units at an average density of 793.5 per square mile (306.37/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.14 persons, and the average family size was 2.82 persons. In the city the population was spread out, with 22.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 21.7% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 29.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 124.8 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 130.9 females. The median age of the city's population was 43.5 years, The median age of males was 41.1 years, for females the median age was 45.7 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 5443 White, 1548 Black or African American, 26 American Indian, 89 Asian, Native Hawaiian, 79 from two or more races and 79 Ohter races.
