Brookings County is one of the 66 county of South Dakota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 28220. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 29668, It is the fifth largest county by population in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It covers total area of 804.76 miē (2084.32 kmē), of which, 794.46 square miles (2057.64 kmē) of it is land and 10.3 square miles (26.68 kmē) of it is water, making it the 41st largest by size in South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 28220 residents, 10665 households, and 6219 families in the county. The population density was 35.5 people per square mile (13.71/kmē), it is sixth most densely populated county in South Dakota. There were 11576 housing units at an average density of 14.6 per square mile (5.64/kmē). The average household size was 2.38 persons, and the average family size was 2.97 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 20.8% under the age of 18, 26.8% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 17.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 97.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 98.8 females. In July 2008, its estimated population was 29668, The racial makeup of the county was 96.04% White, 0.43% Black or African American, 0.98% American Indian, 1.8% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.7% from two or more races.
