As of July 2008, the estimated population was 9035, giving it the 15th largest population among Maine. The city comprises an area of 15.6 square miles (40.4 kmē), of which, 15.1 square miles (39.11 kmē) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.29 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 18th largest by total area among Maine.
