It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 19132, It is the 57th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The county spans an area of 585.53 square miles (1516.52 kmē), of which, 572.41 square miles (1482.54 kmē) of it is land and 13.12 square miles (33.98 kmē) of it is water, making it the sixth largest by size in Kentucky.


As of the census of 2000, there were 18648 people, 7324 households, and 5307 families residing in the county. The population density was 32.6 people per square mile (12.59/kmē), making it the 18th least densely populated county in Kentucky. There were 9890 housing units at an average density of 17.3 per square mile (6.68/kmē). The average household size was 2.51 people, and the average family size was 2.97 people. In the county Population was distributed with 24.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 26% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.3 males.
