Breathitt County, Kentucky is a county located in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 16100. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 15813, making it the 73rd most populous county in Kentucky. The county spans an area of 495.29 square miles (1282.8 sq km), of which, 495.19 square miles (1282.54 sq km) of it is land and 0.09 square miles (0.23 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 14th largest by total area among Kentucky's county.

The population density was 32.5 people per square mile (12.55/kmē), it would be the 17th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Kentucky. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.5% under the age of 18, 10% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 24% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.7 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 15813, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 15543 White, 80 Black or African American, 17 American Indian, 68 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 101 from two or more races.
