Boyd County is a county in the United States of Kentucky. The county has a population of 49752 as per the 2000 census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 48560, making it the 18th most populous county in Kentucky. It covers total area of 161.82 sq mi (419.11 sq km), of which, 160.17 square miles (414.84 sq km) of it is land and 1.65 square miles (4.27 sq km) of it is water, it is the sixth smallest by area in the U.S. state of Kentucky.

The population density was 310.6 people per square mile (119.92/kmē), it is the sixth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Kentucky. There were 21976 housing units at an average density of 137.2 per square mile (52.97/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.38 persons, and the average family size was 2.86 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 21.8% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.1 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 48560, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.47% White, 2.9% Black or African American, 0.18% American Indian, 0.4% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 1.05% from two or more races.
