Box Elder City is a city located in Pennington and Meade counties, South Dakota, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. It is home to over 2841 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the estimated population was 3517, giving it the 27th largest population among South Dakota. It is spread over 5.81 mi˛ (15.05 sq km), making it South Dakota's 23rd largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2841 people, 993 households, and 751 families living in the city. The population density was 489.6 people per square mile (189.04/km˛), it is the 185th most populated city in terms of population density. There were 1072 housing units at an average density of 184.8 per square mile (71.35/km˛). The average household size was 2.86 persons, and the average family size was 3.2 persons.
