Box Butte County, Nebraska is a county located in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 12158. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 11043, giving it the 22nd largest population among Nebraska's county. It is spread over 1077.84 square miles (2791.59 sq km), of which, 1075.29 square miles (2784.99 sq km ) of it is land and 2.54 square miles (6.58 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 14th largest by total area in Nebraska.


According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 12158 people, 4780 households, and 3299 families living in the county. The population density was 11.3 people per square mile (4.36/kmē), it would be the 45th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. There were 5488 housing units at an average density of 5.1 per square mile (1.97/kmē). The average household size was 2.5 persons, and the average family size was 3.05 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 28.1% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 or older.
