The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 37195, It is Mississippi's 21st most populous county. The county encompasses an area of 905.76 sq mi (2345.91 kmē ), of which, 876.28 square miles (2269.55 kmē) of it is land and 29.47 square miles (76.33 kmē) of it is water, giving it the fourth largest by total area among Mississippi's county. It is ranks eighth in the size of its inland waterways in Mississippi.
